Days before Google Marketing Live, the platform confirmed a Journey-Aware Bidding beta, demand-led budget pacing, and Meridian Studio for enterprise MMM.
Google tipped its hand ahead of the May 20 keynote. The headline release is **Journey-Aware Bidding**, a Smart Bidding beta that adjusts bids based on where the user is in the journey, not only on the probability of an immediate conversion. It's the first serious move to feed mid-funnel signals into automated bidding.
Pacing by demand, not by calendar
The second release is about **pacing**. Until now, Search and Shopping budgets spread evenly across days. With the update, Google predicts when consumer demand will spike (weather, events, seasonality) and shifts spend toward those moments, pulling back on slow days. For retailers with broad catalogs the operational change is large: day-by-day control stops being the lever.
Meridian Studio and GeoX
Google also released **Meridian Studio**, the enterprise version of its media mix modeling platform, and at the same time opened **GeoX**, an open source tool for measuring incrementality across geographies. Both solve the same problem: large brands have been asking for MMM that doesn't depend on cookies, and this is Google's bid to own that workflow.
There's also a smaller addition, a **Map View** inside Data Manager, the first-party data activation tool. It shows which dataset is affecting which campaign and surfaces configuration errors. Small feature, ops will thank you.
How to read it
This is plainly the warm-up for Google Marketing Live. What lands on May 20, based on Google's own framing, will turn on three themes: AI-powered campaign tools, agentic commerce, and new YouTube performance capabilities. But the pieces released this week are already testable. If you run Search or Shopping at medium or large budget, request the Journey-Aware Bidding beta now, before the waitlist saturates.
The asterisk: demand pacing assumes Google's model understands your spend timing better than you do. In categories with strong seasonality, or where the brand runs its own calendar (launches, retail events), validate the first month against historical behavior before you let go of the control.
The Map View inside Data Manager looks small on the slide but matters operationally. Most measurement issues marketers chase for weeks turn out to be a misconfigured dataset feeding the wrong campaign. A visual map cuts that diagnostic time and frees the analyst for actual analysis.
The signal: Google laid out the table for the May 20 show. Request the Journey-Aware Bidding beta now and keep Meridian Studio on your Q3 evaluation list.
