Google AI Max exits beta with automatic upgrades coming in September
Google will start auto migrating eligible Search campaigns to its AI powered suite this fall.

Google AI Max for Search campaigns is officially out of beta, and the company is not waiting for advertisers to opt in. Starting in September, Google will begin automatically migrating eligible Search campaigns to AI Max, its AI powered suite for keyword targeting, creative generation, and bidding.
The pitch is compelling on paper. Google reports advertisers using AI Max see up to a 7% increase in conversions compared to standard Search campaigns. The tool broadens keyword matching, auto generates ad assets, and adjusts targeting in real time using signals Google says are too complex for manual management.
For marketers, the tradeoff is real. AI Max hands more decision making to Google's algorithms, which means less granular control over match types, negative keywords, and creative variations. Campaigns that once ran on tightly managed rules will increasingly run on automated inference.
This matters most for teams that rely on precise control for brand safety, compliance, or performance predictability. Automatic migration means some campaigns will shift behavior without an explicit decision from the marketer.
The practical move now is to audit which campaigns are eligible, review current performance benchmarks, and decide where automation should be embraced versus where manual guardrails still need to be enforced before the switch happens.
