Google's AI Mode has now reached 1 billion users and is set as the default experience for search, according to the company. That scale alone should reset priorities for anyone still measuring SEO success purely through blue link rankings.
The bigger shift is behavioral. Google's own data shows AI Overviews are cutting clicks to the traditional first organic result by roughly 34.5 percent. Users are getting answers synthesized on the page, not sent off to click through and verify.
In response, Google has published guidance stating plainly that AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are not separate disciplines. They are still SEO. The mechanics of crawling, indexing, and relevance still apply. What changes is the output format and the goal.
For marketers, this means the metric that matters is shifting from ranking position to citation presence. Being the source an AI model chooses to reference and summarize now carries more weight than sitting at position one in a results list that fewer people scroll through.
Practically, this pushes content strategy toward clarity, structured data, and authoritative, well sourced material that AI systems can confidently pull from and attribute. Vague, keyword-stuffed pages built for old ranking signals are less likely to earn a citation.
The takeaway is not that SEO is dying. It is that the finish line moved. Visibility now means being quoted inside the answer, not just linked below it.
