Google started rolling out the May 2026 Core Update on May 21, just 43 days after the previous one. That's the fastest cadence in years. In parallel, the company confirmed AI Overviews now reaches 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode crossed 1 billion.
The Core Update touches every region, language and content category. The compressed cadence (43 days from the March one) marks a change: Google is adjusting ranking more often, in sync with how AI Mode evolves. Stacked on top, on May 6 Google announced five updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode: inline links next to bullets, hover previews and article suggestions at the end of the answer. Brands cited inside AI Overviews receive 35% more organic clicks than non-cited competitors.
Classic SEO isn't enough anymore
Thin informational content (the kind that answered FAQ-style questions without adding judgment) is losing visibility fast. Sites with strong topical authority and named expert voices are holding or gaining. Google's official guide spelled it out: SEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) stopped being separate disciplines. Anyone still treating them as distinct teams loses twice, once in traditional organic and again in the synthesized answer.
Three operational rules
For the brand to show up inside the synthesized answer, three rules work in 2026. One, signed content: the bylined expert (with a verifiable bio) climbs. Two, structured data with consistency: schema.org implemented well and maintained. Three, direct answers: if the question is "what's the average price", answer it on the first line, not in paragraph five. Questions with one-sentence answers from a clear brand source are the ones the model cites. The ones with 800 words before the useful data point get cut.
The signal: AI Overviews has 2.5 billion users and a fresh core update. Classic SEO as an isolated practice is over. What remains is signed content, clean data and direct answers. If the brand doesn't enter the cited source set in six months, in twelve it won't enter at all.
