Five updates for AI Overviews (inline links, hover previews, Reddit voices) plus Google's first official guide to show up in generative answers.
Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, announced five changes to **AI Overviews** and **AI Mode** on May 6. And on May 15, Google published its first **official AI Optimization Guide**, aimed at anyone hoping to surface in generative answers. It's the piece the SEO industry had been asking for since AIO launched in 2024.
The five changes
First, **inline links directly in the body** of the AI answer, not only at the end. This lifts outbound clicks for sites cited inside the paragraph. Second, **desktop hover previews**: the user hovers over a link and sees a preview without clicking. Third, a **"Subscribed" label** that flags content from outlets the user already subscribes to. Fourth, **article suggestions at the end** of the AI answer, a brand new position to enter. Fifth, **Community Perspectives**, which surfaces verbatim quotes from Reddit and forums inside the answer, labeled "community".
The changes started rolling out in English searches in the US between May 6 and 7. Broader market rollout is expected through Q2.
What the official guide says
The guide is short but defines which signals Google considers relevant for citation. Key points: content with clear structure (headings, lists, specific data points), schema markup appropriate to the category, verifiable external references, and declared authorship with provable expertise. No explosive new signals. What matters is that there's now an official document SEO teams can point to when the marketing director asks "what's our move on AIO?".
What it means for traffic
First-year AIO data shows CTR drops of up to 58% on queries where the generative answer appears. The new pieces, inline links and Community Perspectives, open routes to recover some of the lost click. But the structural shift stands: if your SEO strategy was "blue link ranking", the model is spent.
Three concrete tasks for this week. One: run your top content through the official guide's checklist and flag the gaps. Two: review Search Console for queries where you've been cited inside an AIO and measure the click lift from the new inline format. Three: if your brand has an active Reddit community, optimize that presence. Community Perspectives turns it into a placement.
The critical asterisk: Google still doesn't report how many times your content appears inside AIO without generating a click. Until that metric exists, the ROI conversation with leadership stays incomplete. Ask for it every chance you get.
The signal: Google formalized the AIO conversation with an official guide. Adapt your top content this week and treat Reddit as new placement inventory.
