Meta opens AI Sandbox v2 · generative video for Reels, free
Meta's AI Sandbox jumps from image to video and removes per-use cost. The economics of paid creative production flatten.

Meta announced this week the global rollout of AI Sandbox v2 inside Ads Manager for all advertisers. The release ships short-form video generation from text and image prompts, alongside the image variants and copy capabilities that v1 already had. The headline is not the feature. The headline is the pricing model · generation is free above a generous monthly cap, with no per-asset cost and no separate licensing.
The collapse of creative marginal cost
The change rewrites the SMB creative economics. A brand that in 2024 produced four video variants a month at $2,000 each with an agency now produces forty variants with a prompt template setup and zero marginal cost. The quality does not match a high-end human-first production · lighting, casting, direction · but it comfortably beats the average feed ad. For 80% of advertising inventory, that is the bar.
Three practical effects this quarter
The first is budget · the SMB that spent 20% of monthly budget on production now redirects that 20% into media spend. That increases competitive pressure on Meta auctions and translates into higher CPMs before year end. The second is agency · the production-house value proposition shifts. Baseline production commoditizes. What gets paid is brand strategy, casting, art direction and the curation of which variants get served to which audience. The layer that survives is intelligent A/B testing and creative ops. The third is talent · the junior creatives who learned to edit in CapCut now compete with an AI assistant that produces faster and cheaper. The skill that pays is tool direction, not manual operation.
The line that has not been crossed yet
Meta has not automated the decision of which video gets served to which audience. That decision still runs through Advantage+ and the bidding algorithm. The generative layer produces the inventory · the targeting layer decides allocation. When the two integrate · and they will · the performance marketer's role will look more like a product manager for a self-regulating system. Human action will concentrate on setting brand constraints (what should NOT be generated) and reviewing exceptions.
The minimum viable test this month for a marketing team is clear · take the highest-volume always-on campaign, generate 20 variants with Sandbox v2 in a couple of hours, run them for a week against the current human-produced set, and measure CR and CTR. If the read is positive (likely for SMB) it folds into the pipeline. If it is neutral (likely for premium brands with strong casting), Sandbox stays for volume creative and premium production continues.
This week's signal: Meta just made paid creative free. The people who win the next quarter are the ones who direct the tool, not the ones who operate the editor.
