On May 20, Reddit announced that Max Campaigns, its AI campaign product, now opens to app advertisers. It runs installs, in-app events and purchases. Early tests showed 15% lower CPA and 28% more results.
Max Campaigns predicts the value of every impression and reallocates creative, audience and bid automatically. Until now it was a web-campaign product. The extension to apps puts it head to head with Meta's Advantage+ and with Google Ads' App campaigns. Reddit reported DocMorris cut cost per install by 20% and purchase CPA by 73% using the product. The company also expanded App Event Optimization: the tool stops optimizing only for installs and starts optimizing for valuable in-app actions like a purchase or a verified sign-up.
Why Reddit can fight in mobile
Reddit has something no other social feed has: vertical communities with declared intent. Someone entering r/personalfinance states exactly what they're looking for. When a bidding model starts reading that context and adjusting the bid, performance climbs. That explains why health, fintech and travel categories performed best in Max betas. The open question is whether Reddit can hold inventory quality as the app-install format scales, since that format historically dragged fraud and trash placements.
What's new for the media team
Three things become media-team work. One, open a Max app test in intent categories, not affinity ones. Two, map the Reddit MMP setup (Adjust, AppsFlyer, Singular) because internal reporting changes. Three, set a spend cap before letting the AI run: Max moves the bid by itself, and brand exposure inside the wrong subreddit has a brand cost.
The signal: Reddit stopped being the odd channel on the plan and started competing where Meta and Google already win. Performance is strong in intent categories. The risk is brand, and it's managed with caps, not with full surrender to the automation.
