SEO shifts to AI surfaces as Search Console adds AI performance reports
Google now measures AI Overviews performance directly in Search Console, even as ChatGPT dominates AI referral traffic.

Google Search Console has begun rolling out performance reports specifically for AI generated search experiences, giving website owners visibility into how their pages surface within AI Overviews and related features, according to Position Digital. The update matters because it signals that Google now treats AI surfaces as measurable, reportable inventory rather than an experimental layer, and it arrives as new data shows ChatGPT alone accounts for 92.4% of AI referral traffic across the web.
AI Reports Meet SEO Tracking
For marketers, this is a structural shift in where SEO value gets created and tracked. Search Console has historically measured clicks, impressions and rankings within traditional blue link results, but the new AI performance reports mean teams can now see how content performs inside AI generated summaries, a distinct and separate surface from classic search. At the same time, the referral concentration data highlights that ChatGPT, not Google's own AI Overviews, is currently the dominant gateway sending traffic from AI tools back to publisher and brand sites, according to the same Position Digital analysis.
The ChatGPT Referral Gap
This creates a split reality: Google is building measurement tools for its own AI surfaces, while the actual referral traffic is overwhelmingly flowing through OpenAI's ChatGPT. Marketing and growth teams optimizing purely for Google's AI Overviews risk missing where real AI driven visits originate today.
Why It Matters For SEO
Why it matters: SEO teams should treat AI Overviews and ChatGPT as separate channels requiring separate tracking and optimization strategies. Use the new Search Console AI reports to monitor Google's surfaces, but do not assume they capture the full picture, since ChatGPT referral dominance means content and brand visibility strategies built solely around Google AI Overviews will undercount and underserve where AI driven discovery is actually happening.
