Skyscanner has taken a TikTok trend and put it on a billboard, literally.
The travel search engine spotted a viral sound clip circulating on TikTok, one tied to spontaneous getaways and impulsive booking decisions, and turned it into a physical out of home placement at San Juan airport in Puerto Rico.
Instead of the usual flow of airport ads pushing travelers toward social content, Skyscanner reversed the direction. The campaign pulls a moment born entirely online and drops it into a high traffic physical space, right where travelers are already thinking about their next trip.
The billboard references the audio directly, betting that enough travelers will recognize it and feel that jolt of relatability mid transit. For those unfamiliar with the sound, it still works as a playful, contemporary piece of creative that signals cultural fluency.
Why it matters for marketers: this is a clean example of taking earned, organic momentum and converting it into owned brand real estate. Most brands chase virality by pushing content onto social platforms. Skyscanner did the opposite, extracting a viral moment and giving it a physical presence in the real world.
It also shows how airports are becoming testing grounds for culturally specific, platform aware creative, rather than generic travel messaging. For a placement that many travelers see for mere seconds, tapping into something already familiar and emotionally charged makes it more likely to land instantly.
Expect more brands to mine social audio, memes and trends as raw material for OOH, treating virality not as a metric to chase but as a canvas for physical brand experiences.
