Snap Inc. announced on April 28, and began rolling out through May, **AI Sponsored Snaps**: a new ad format that places brand-operated AI agents inside Snapchat's Chat tab. The whole interaction happens inside the app, no redirects, no external landing.
How it works and why placement matters
Users can ask the agent questions, request recommendations, and hold a sustained conversation. The key detail is where the format lives: in Chat, which per Snap holds **85% of active users every day**. Not a decorative placement, the space where the audience already spends time.
The alpha launch partner is **Experian**, which will use the format for conversations about credit and money management. The partner choice tells a story: not a retailer, not a CPG, financial services, a category where conversation has value on its own and where the "go to the website" friction has always been high.
The numbers Snap wants you to see
Snap framed AI Sponsored Snaps as the evolution of the Sponsored Snaps format, which had already been delivering **22% more conversions with cost per action almost 20% lower** than the platform average. The pitch is that the agent version pushes that gap further. With nearly a billion monthly users and a chat surface where the audience opens the conversation, the upside is real.
What to do this week
Three concrete moves. First, if the brand has Q&A use cases (banking, telco, health, education, retail with complex catalogs), ask your Snap rep for program access. Second, define the agent's guardrails before you brief creative: what it can answer, what it must escalate to a human, what information it never touches. Third, decide how you measure success. Classic CTR doesn't apply here. You need conversation-depth metrics, in-chat retention, and assisted conversion.
The critical asterisk: putting a brand agent into chat with a mostly young audience puts responsibility on what the agent says. Snap guarantees that private messages, calls, contacts, and group activity are not used for targeting, but the agent conversation itself is logged. Run it past legal before launch.
The signal: Snapchat turned Chat into inventory. Request access this week if your brand has questions to answer, but tie the agent down with guardrails before the first message.
