Walmart Connect API expansion: retail media goes open
After adding Meta and TikTok integrations in April, Walmart opens its retail media stack to third-party tools. Tech partners get programmatic access to closed-loop measurement.

Walmart Connect this week opened the API for tech partners that the company had flagged in its April announcement of the social media integration. Third-party agency tools, programmatic platforms and measurement vendors now get programmatic access to Walmart Connect campaigns, audience insights, and the closed-loop SKU-level conversion data that until now only lived inside the Walmart Connect Ad Center.
Why this move matters more than it sounds
Until now, an agency running a coordinated campaign across Meta, TikTok, Walmart Connect and a DSP had to manage four separate workflows and four separate reporting frameworks. The Walmart Connect data was the most valuable of the four because it was the only one with deterministic SKU-level purchase attribution. It was also the least integrated into agency tooling. The API closes that gap.
Practical implications for agencies and brand teams
For agencies and brand-side trade-marketing teams, the implications are concrete. Agency-side platforms like Skai, Pacvue and Helium 10 will integrate Walmart Connect into their unified dashboards within the next quarter. Brand-side teams using Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Klaviyo or HubSpot will get Walmart Connect data flowing into the same customer profiles where they already track first-party purchases and email engagement. The buyer journey becomes legible end-to-end for the first time.
Walmart as the retail media operating layer
The strategic story is bigger. Walmart Connect is now positioning itself as the retail media operating layer, not just an ad surface. The pitch to brands is direct · run all your performance media through Walmart Connect because we are the only ones with closed-loop measurement, and we will integrate cleanly into whatever tool you already use. Amazon DSP has had this posture for years. Walmart Connect catching up changes the competitive dynamic.
The honest skepticism. APIs are easy to launch and hard to operate at scale. Rate limits, data freshness, and which dimensions are exposed (SKU-level versus category-level) will determine whether the integration is meaningful or cosmetic. The first 90 days of partner feedback will tell us which.
For brands not selling through Walmart, this product is irrelevant. For everyone in CPG, beauty, household, and home goods who does sell through Walmart, the procurement question is whether to consolidate ad and measurement spend through Walmart Connect or maintain duplicate workflows. The math has shifted. The single-platform option is credible in a way it was not 90 days ago.
The broader signal. Retail media's next phase is not about who has the most inventory. It is about who has the cleanest workflow from social discovery to retail purchase. Walmart just took another meaningful lead on that lane. Amazon will respond. Target's Roundel is the question mark.
This week's signal: Retail media's measurement war just got an API. Reopen the consolidation conversation if you sell through Walmart.
